This series started in 2006 as a collaboration with my friend Wout Berger. We photographed landscapes in different scales. Wout made the overviews and I made close ups, capturing small postcard sized pieces of the landscape with a very high resolution.

I used a combination of stacking and stitching: panorama photos with different focus layers. It resulted in a series of unusual landscapes. My aim was to make the images as complex as possible. Photography is a flat medium and compared to a painting it misses the texture of the material, the contrasts between different thicknesses and transparentness of the material. I tried to create photographs that had such an amount of details and complexity that you could watch it for a long time. Each time viewing it you could see new constellations of shapes and colours.

The subjects I choose were often small pieces of landscape that you would normally pass by without notice. A small waterpool in a tire crack in a dirt road. One of my favourite locations were the tide pools in Brittany, France. It is easy to argue that being there makes it more like a holiday. But when you are in such an environment it is hard to stop working. The hidden organisms in the pools between the rocks are amazing. Each rock you turn over is full of a living painting of sponges, tunicates and other encrusting and hiding animals. Making images like this is as if you are undertaking a micro expedition full of surprising discoveries. I hope the resulting images can also be observed in such a way. As a mesmerising journey for the eye.
